The Grand Rapids Tidal Waves Women’s Tackle Football Team (The Waves) won’t be taking the field this year for its third season after all. The season has been officially cancelled by the Women’s Football Alliance due to the COVID-19 pandemic although there is still the possibility of some exhibition games later this fall.
“Even though it’s a great disappointment to our coaching staff, players, and fans, the well-being of the team comes first” said Troy Johnson, head coach of The Waves. “We are continuing to work and study looking forward to next season and being better, stronger and hungry to play for the city of Grand Rapids.”
The current roster of 35 women from all over the West Michigan area began practicing back in December and continue to hold virtual practices and film sessions in an attempt to stay ready for the day when they can return to the field to play the game they love. “It’s incredibly disappointing not to be able to get out on the field this spring. They say absence makes the heart grow fonder, but in this case, I think it just makes our drive a lot stronger” said Sarah Geels, Waves rookie wide receiver. Tryouts for the 2021 roster are currently scheduled for October.
